Soup and salad can be a complete meal by itself but either compliment a beef dinner.

I like to think of soups as a complement to a beef dinner and a stew usually as a complete meal.

Soups are almost always thinner than stews, which contain more solid ingredients.

Even the thick soup category usually doesn't have the quantity of solid ingredients that a stew has.

A salad can be a combination of most anything. One of the most memorable I've had was at a friends house. His wife served a simple lettuce wedge with Thousand Island dressing as a side dish with our meal.

That salad is memorable because prior to that time I had always been a meat and taters guy. Since then I've come to appreciate salads of all kinds much more.
