Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Slow Cooker Pot Roast

A Slow Cooker Pot Roast is by far the easiest way to prepare pot roast.

Once you prep the aromatics and veggies and brown the roast you place it in the slow cooker and forget it until dinner.

The only bad thing that can happen is overcooking.

Herbed Slow Cooker Pot Roast Recipe

3 to 4 lb. beef pot roast
2 Tbsp butter or margarine
1 lb can tomatoes
1/2 cup dry red wine (optional)
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1/2 tsp minced garlic
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp basil
1/2 tsp pepper
2 Tbsp butter or margarine, softened
2 Tbsp flour

Brown the beef pot roast in the butter in a frying pan. Place the beef roast in the slow cooker (crock-pot) with the remaining ingredients except the butter and flour. Cover and cook on low for 10 to 12 hours (high 4 1/2 to 5 hours).

If thick gravy is desired remove the beef pot roast from the cooker and turn the heat to high. Add the butter and flour that have been mixed together and cook until thickened, stirring often.

Bavarian Slow Cooker Pot Roast Recipe

3 to 5 lb. Beef pot roast
Flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Ground cumin (a little)
2 Tbsp cooking oil
3/4 cup chopped onion

Sauce:
1 can beer
8 oz. can tomato sauce
2 tsp. ground ginger
1 Tbsp. Cinnamon
1 bay leaf (2 if you like a stronger bay flavor)
1 1/2 tsp. salt (or to taste)
1 1/2 tsp. pepper (or to taste)

Rub beef pot roast with flour, salt and pepper to taste and a little ground cumin. Brown the roast on all sides in cooking oil. Remove beef from the pan and brown the chopped onion in same pan. Put the beef pot roast and the onion in a slow cooker (crock-pot). Combine the sauce ingredients and add to the pot.

Cook on slow 6 to 10 hours, or high 3 to 4 hours.

Hint: Long, slow cooking tends to eliminate the flavor of ground seasonings. You may want to add additional ginger and/or cumin, as well as salt and pepper near the end of the cooking time.

Either of these Slow Cooker Pot Roast Recipes will work with any of the cuts of beef that require braising. My personal favorite at this time is a 7-bone chuck.

Buy Beef Online

Now why would anyone want to buy beef online? Beef is readily available at the supermarket. There’s only one answer: Quality! In order to compete with the supermarkets mail order beef has to be the best.

(Don’t buy beef online for Slow Cooker Pot Roast. Or for that matter any old fashioned pot roast dinner. Supermarket beef is fine.)

In fact there are some types of gourmet beef that you can’t get except online. Kobe beef, grass fed beef, dry aged beef? I’ll bet you’ve never seen those in the supermarket. The only way to get them is to buy beef online.

Kobe Beef

Kobe beef is from the Japanese Waygu cattle. The marbling, flavor and tenderness of Kobe beef puts it grades above USDA prime beef. But you can only get Kobe beef when you buy beef online.

Grass Fed Beef

Grass is the natural food of the beef animal. And some people feel the flavor of grass fed beef is far superior to feed lot beef. This is gourmet beef at it’s best. And once again you can only get grass fed beef when you buy beef online.

Dry Aged Beef

Dry aged beef is how beef was done in the good old days. The beef is hung in a controlled temperature and humidity environment and allowed to age for almost a month.

Why can’t you get dry aged beef at the super market? Expense! Dry aged beef loses approximately 1/3 of its weight during the drying process. Today’s wet aged beef brings more profit to the processor.

Guess what? You can only get dry aged beef when you buy beef online! Dry aged beef is truly gourmet beef.

Old Fashioned Pot Roast

Certainly you wouldn’t want to buy beef online for old fashioned pot roast. Mail order beef is for special occasions. Your Sunday pot roast dinner is fine with a chuck roast from the supermarket.

Slow Cooker Pot Roast is fine with supermarket beef also. As any old fashioned pot roast dinner would be.

On that special occasion, such as boss for dinner night, is when this beef will make an impression. My thoughts would be running along the line of a Prime rib dinner with sure enough USDA prime beef. You can only get USDA prime beef when you buy beef online. USDA choice is the best you can get at the supermarket.

Enjoy Slow Cooker Pot Roast with your family with beef from the grocery. But when you really want to impress buy beef online.
