Chinese Beef Stew Recipe
Each Chinese Beef Stew Recipe listed here would probably not be recognized on a Chinese
dinner table.
They do contain traditional Chinese seasonings but they are Westernized dishes.
Chinese Beef Stew Recipe (Hot Pot Chinese Stew)
Chinese Stew Ingredients
4 tsp Canola oil, divided
1 1/2 lb beef chuck
1/2 cup chopped green onions
2 Tbsp minced peeled fresh ginger
1 tsp aniseed, crushed
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 (14 oz) can of beef broth, sodium reduced
3 cups water
1/4 cup soy sauce, sodium reduced
1 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp dry sherry
1-1 1/2 tsp chili paste with garlic
2 (3") cinnamon sticks
2 cups cubed peeled turnip (1 inch cubes)
1 1/2 cups of baby carrots
1 tbsp water
2 tsp cornstarch
8 cups of fresh spinach (about 1/2 lb)
Chinese Stew Directions
Cut the beef chuck into one-inch cubes. Heat 2 teaspoons Canola oil in a Dutch oven over medium high heat. Add half of the beef chuck and brown on all sides. Remove from the pan. Repeat with the remaining oil and beef chuck.
Add the onions, ginger, aniseed and garlic to the pan and sauté for 30 seconds. Stir in the broth, scraping the pan to loosen browned bits.
Return the beef chuck to the pan. Add 3 cups of water, soy sauce, sherry, chili paste and the cinnamon sticks. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover and reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer for 1 hour.
Add the turnips and carrots and simmer for 45 minutes.
Combine 1 tablespoon of water and the cornstarch and add to the beef chuck mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 1 minute stirring constantly.
Add spinach and cook for 3 min or until wilted. Discard the cinnamon sticks.
The following is a slow cooker version of Chinese Beef Stew.
Chinese Beef Stew Recipe (Chinese Black Beef)
Chinese Stew Ingredients
2 to 3 pounds beef chuck roast
2/3 cup soy sauce
1 cup good red wine
1 teaspoon sugar
4 to 6 cloves garlic
2 inches ginger cut up then slightly minced
1 white onion cut in slices
Chinese Stew Directions
Cut the beef chuck roast into 1" cubes. Sear the beef chuck cubes on all sides just until browned.
Place the beef chuck cubes in a crock-pot or slow cooker and cover with water. Add the rest of the ingredients cook for 6 hours on low.
This Chinese stew is delicious served over rice. Leftovers make good ingredients for fried rice. Enjoy this Chinese Beef stew recipe.
